Green Schoolyards

At CAN!, we believe school grounds can become vibrant, living classrooms that nurture both students and ecosystems. Our Green Schoolyard services transform asphalt and underused spaces into gardens, habitats, and outdoor learning zones—in partnership with school communities.

What We Do

  • Work with schools to design and build rain gardens, native plantings, pollinator beds, edible landscapes, and permeable paving

  • Install street trees, kid-friendly plantings, and infrastructure like benches, signage, and permeable pathways.

  • Support curriculum integration, garden clubs, afterschool programming and student stewardship so the space becomes a hands-on learning resource

  • Maintain and enhance existing garden spaces over time through funding support and community care

Our Experience

We’ve brought these ideas to life at:

  • Independence High School

  • James Lick Middle School

  • Washington High School

  • Dolores Huerta Elementary School

  • Panorama Elementary – Coming soon

Why it Matters

Green schoolyards:

  • Help absorb rainwater and reduce runoff

  • Provide shade, cooling during recess

  • Create a safer, more dynamic outdoor environment that supports all types of learners

  • Offer outdoor classrooms where students engage in ecology, science, and art

  • Cultivate pride, environmental literacy, and community connection

  • Enhance urban habitat for local wildlife

If your school wants to build a living classroom that teaches, inspires, and endures—let’s make it happen, email ClimateActionNowCA@gmail.com to get started today.
