Climate Action Now! has partnered with Independence High School since 2013, when we first led the installation of the school garden. Over the past decade, this collaboration has grown into a long-standing relationship rooted in care for both the land and the school community.

Today, the garden thrives as a vibrant outdoor classroom and wellness space. The Garden Club, science classes, and CAN! work side by side to maintain and expand the space through seasonal plantings, hands-on learning, and community celebrations. We have hosted schoolwide garden parties that bring students and staff together to plant vegetables and flowers, create handmade garden signs, and share food as a community.
Throughout the school year, students gain hands-on experience in planting, pruning, weeding, mulching, and harvesting. The garden also provides space for creative projects such as bouquet-making and herbal tea workshops, offering new ways for students to connect with ecology and wellness.
Through this work, students build skills in environmental stewardship, leadership, and teamwork, while developing a deeper understanding of ecological systems. With ongoing support from CAN!, the Independence garden continues to flourish as a space for growth, learning, and community connection.
